The Gift of Freedom

How often do we look in the mirror at ourselves? I look every day when I brush my hair and teeth. Most of the time, I may be in a daze, wondering what the day will bring or what my dreams maybe that night. I often really miss the reflection of the beautiful woman looking back at me. This week we will experience a very different Fourth of July. For most of our celebrations and festivities may be a mere glimmer of last year. What is it that we celebrate each year? Sure we celebrate our individual freedoms. I am grateful and proud to live in a country where many fought for my freedom to make personal choices. I am also aware that my individual choices impact my small little family and society's larger whole. When I look in the mirror, I see my family of origin, my chosen family, my ancestors, and the whole world. I live my life as one who represents one small part of the whole. This, of course, includes our Mother Earth. We are in the midst of a civil war. We are fighting for our lives. Some are fighting to hold onto the individual freedoms that have suppressed and held back other fellow Americans. These Americans have fought each day for the same freedoms and have met great resistance from some. We are one country filled with a melting pot of beautiful human beings. The time is now. As you take the time to celebrate the Fourth of July in some small way, remember that the people who fought in the Civil War, later creating our Constitution, fought for each human being's rights and freedoms. I leave you with the Preamble from our Constitution…

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
