Home is usually equated with a place where we live, a town, or a geographic area. What does the word home mean to you?

A home is also a foundation where families dwell and where love can evolve and grow.

Jesus often spoke of his relationship with God. He tried to help his followers understand that God was alive dwelling within each of them. “Anyone who loves me will follow my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them.” John 14:23

Jesus was trying to prepare his followers for his departure.

The essence of His message is that “home is where love dwells.

I have struggled with the word home. For me, a home has always been where I lived and the people in my life. Recently I have met some people who, when asked about family, tell me that they no longer speak to each other. There are many reasons why we lose touch with our families. Often I hear people talk through their pain and loss, sharing their sacred stories.

I have discovered that home is the love that dwells within my heart, my soul. Our experiences in life tend to change or block our understanding of home/love. I am sure some have never had the experience of love, so find it hard to receive a gesture of kindness.

When I worked at Pine Street Inn, a homeless shelter in Boston, Thanksgiving was a special time. It was magical. The men and women seemed more open to receiving the small kindnesses offered with a simple meal. Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for the many blessings we have experienced in our lives. Our nation stops and reflects on the goodness in our lives. We remember our loved ones who forged new beginnings by moving to the US wanting something better for their families. Who created the essence of home with what they understood was love.

Jesus' message was simple yet profound. He opened the doorway to our hearts with the knowledge that God dwells there waiting for recognition. The question remains how do we find our home in God? I believe the message is to “love yourself and one another as I have loved you without distinction.” Then you will know and understand the essence of love that dwells within you.

This week our affirmations will focus on home! Have a great week!
